Driving For Meditation

It’s no wonder that truck drivers are some of the most centered, generally calm and relaxed people around. Unless you truly piss off a truck driver, you may never even know they were in the room. What is the key to meditation? Focus, stillness, tuning in and zoning out at the same time. It’s the art of blocking everything out and still being at one with the world. At least that’s what I heard. People will always have their day to day agendas, kids, jobs, bills, relationships, and so on. I am no different. I have realized that the more I have on my mind while driving shortens the time and distance of the trip. That is unless your wife’s having a baby or something, then you just want to teleport there, warp speed and all that. Other than a super duper emergency, sometimes I turn on my car, start driving and I go into cruise control. I’m not speaking of the car, I’m speaking about me. Taking lights, turns, dodging traffic is just a blur sometimes. Nine times out of ten, people drive the same places on a regular basis. They know the hours of operation, who has the discounts, where to get good pizza, etc... we are hard wired, so it doesn’t take much concentration anymore to navigate. That’s how we manage to blank out and briefly meditate when behind the wheel. I’m not saying we should turn off the music, burn some incense or candles on the dashboard and turn on the soothing sounds of the Himalayas. However, we can be so deep in thought sometimes, we don’t even remember the drive. It has happened to everyone. You get in the car and start driving to one destination and then you either make it all the way to the wrong destination or stop yourself half way to the wrong destination. The common term we have all expelled is, "Where the hell am I going?"

Now imagine a solo road trip. No one speaking in your ear. The phone is turned off. All you hear is the engine and the wind. Clearing your mind is so easy at this point. Releasing the chains for just a little while can bring new perspective to your life. They say stepping out the box and looking in can give you a better picture of your day to day monotonous routine. Not thinking about anything, yet reflecting and evaluating seem to go hand in hand when all your focusing on is the stretch of road in front of you. I call this the art of passive focused relaxation. In reality, it’s simply a form of meditation. You can sit at home and have some drinks, a bubble bath and hope the kids don't wake up or the house doesn't catch on fire or you can simply drive intothe sunset for a little while.

That’s why people just jump in the car and roll out. Where? Who cares. Just as long as it gives you time to escape.

So people, whenever you get a chance to get away and take a road trip, even if it’s in the same state, do it. The benefits of unwinding are so underrated, yet so easy to attain its amazing. Not to mention the fact you can get to visit places you have never been with a therapeutic anicdote use as your reasoning for getting the hell out of dodge. lol

A two hour drive to no where by yourself can honestly be better than a planned flight with some people or a person that may end up being annoying. Lol.

Think about not thinking about it and I promise your thoughts will provide clarity. Peace of mind, is a peaceful soul.
