In 126 years that Vogue magazine has been in publication, they never featured a cover shot by a black photographer. Did black people not own cameras? Could they not read the instructions? Were black photographers like unicorns? What ever the case may be, 23-year-old Tyler Mitchell from the A, yes, Atlanta, Georgia has accomplished that previously unattainable feat. Mitchell attended and received a Bachelor's of Fine Arts at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. The same school Whoopi Goldberg and James Franco went to. Mitchell has been in the shadows, but still seen quite frequently. He has shot for Mercedez Benz, Givenghy, Office Magazine with Spike Lee on the Cover, and many many more. In the circle of gossipers, this is really monumental on so many levels. The Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour who held that position for 30 years, finally featured a strong black icon, on the cover shot by an upcoming black photographer on what is said to be her last issue with the company. Some what of a drop the mic, "I'm Out", sort of thing. In a time went racial and gender stress is at an all time high, this is huge!!! Some critics say that may Wintour didn't want the stress and have to worry about her last issue so she let Mitchell shoot it, just in case people had reservations about the cover. After 30 years of running Vogue, I'm pretty sure she knows what she's doing. She just attracted millions of Beyonce fans, the black consumer audience, the youth, and more to a outdated relic called a paperback magazine. Sales should do really great this issue. I mean hey, it's an historical issue.
Did I mention Beyonce looks great as always?
